Song Text

Plaisir d’amour
Ne dure qu’un moment:
Chagrin d’amour dure toute la vie.

J’ai tout quitté pour l’ingrate Sylvie;
Elle me quitte et prend un autre amant.

Plaisir d’amour
Ne dure qu’un moment:
Chagrin d’amour dure toute la vie.

“Tant que cette eau coulera doucement
Vers ce ruisseau qui borde
La prairie je t’aimerai,”
Me répétait Sylvie.
L’eau coule encor,
Elle a changé pourtant.

Plaisir d’amour
Ne dure qu’un moment:
Chagrin d’amour dure toute la vie.

One Response to “Martini - Plaisir d’amour”

  1. David Says:

It’s hard to know what to put as Martini’s proper first name. He was born Johann, but he adopted the Martini name when he moved to France. Ultimately, I chose to put his French name here, as does Wikipedia. The sheet music from the Anthology uses an Italianicized version.

This song shares many elements with, and was presumably the inspiration for, Elvis Presley’s “I can’t help falling in love with you”. (This was apparently a fashion, since his “Love me tender” hit was to the familiar tune of “Aura Lee”.)
